ABOUT US
The Amherst Girls Rugby Team was founded in 2008 and has competed in the Rugby Ohio - Northern Ohio High School league since 2009. The Amherst Girls Rugby Team is a "Community Club" and is open to all area high school girls (that currently don't have a girls rugby team at their school and we are the closest team to them), grades 9 -12 under the age of 19. Being based out of Amherst Ohio, over the years we have had girls playing with us from Elyria, Firelands, Edison, and Lorain high schools.
One of the founding players wanted to play rugby, the Amherst boys had just started a team but they said no to a girl playing with them. So she and a group of 15 dedicated players contacted Rugby Ohio and figured out how to start a team. A few of the boys from Elyria Catholic Boys Rugby came over to help show them how to play rugby, they were not allowed to compete in the high school league in 2008 until they found a coach. This happened the next year and in 2009 they played their first league season. They have been going strong ever since.
